Save Newhaven museum

Worrying news recently about the Newhaven museum. According to an article in the Evening News the council is in dispute with Forth Ports, and Newhaven museum may not reopen!

As a campaign for a Leith museum, we certainly don't want Newhaven to lose its museum. Newhaven has its own history, and the Newhaven museum should complement a Leith museum. Let your City Councillor know that Newhaven museum should be reopened as soon as possible! Click here for details of how to contact your local Edinburgh councillor.

Newhaven Heritage Museum is vital to the social History of Newhaven. For many years Newhaven was a separate village on the outskirts of Edinburgh and its inhabitants were know as 'Bow tows'. It had a rich tradition of fishing and the Newhaven Fisherlassies Choir was well known. They even had a song 'Caller Herrin' which was written by Lady Nairne about thefishwifes of Newhaven. Charles Darwin was thought to have walked along the shore at Newhaven to look at the sea life there. Another big part of Newhaven's history is the Great Michael which was was built in Newhaven King James IV and was his biggest warship at the time. The Museum is staffed mainly by Volunteers and is visited by people all over the world. Newhaven has a fantastic varied history which would be lost if the Museum were to close.

Please help save it

Having visited the Heritage Museum in Newhaven I found it added a distinctive historical flavour to the village and how the fishing industry has changed over the years. It would be a sad day to see the museum closed down. The artifacts would certainly be distributed to another area but again the heart of Newhaven would be ripped apart just like they managed to do with the re-housing project. Let's try and keep what little remains of Newhaven in the village.
